  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from alan goldman -- good writing -bad book : This author is a great writer there is no doubt about that. The characters were well developed the atmospherics were wonderful and he is joy to read. So why one star? Because I quit after reading about a third of the book. There is no cohesive narrative. He is telling a story. A story should have a beginning a middle and an end. This one had a beginning and then a big jumble that made me not care about the end if there is one. • 2.0 out of 5 stars from BrendaP -- Disappointing : I’m a huge fan of the author and rated his two previous books five stars. But I slogged through HARLEM SHUFFLE. I agree with the comments of other reviewers that Whitehead’s descriptions of Harlem are rich and riveting. And I found the protagonist a sympathetic, likable flawed character. However, the story itself did not grab me after the first third of the book, and by the last page I was glad to put the book down. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2021 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Ringer -- Slumming : The son of wealthy parents in NYC, educated at a highly selective prep school and then Harvard with a white wife will tell you all about the struggles of being black, slavery and shuffling in Harlem ( Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from John K. Mainieri -- Not The Heist Story You’re Exoecting : When I read Colson Whitehead was writing a heist novel, I was thrilled. Such a great storyteller, I imagined a tale told in the fashion of the late, great Chester Himes, the man who gave us “Cotton Comes To Harlem” “Come Back, Charleston Blue” and “A Rage In Harlem”, books I’d devoured as a teen. But I was also a great fan of Dick Gregory, who did not write heist novels. Gregory wrote passionate tracts on the belittling and desecration of his people, the people of Harlem, and Detroit and Chicago, and of every black community in America. With “Harlem Shuffle”, Mr. Whitehead has not written a Chester Himes heist caper, but instead, a not-so-nostalgic look back at the Harlem of the early sixties as though Dick Gregory wrote a heist novel, and in doing so, has devised a story that looks to be a heist novel, but is instead, an amalgam of Himes, Gregory, with hints of Richard Wright and Lorraine Hansberry mixed in for flavor. This is not what I expected, but is intensely readable nonetheless. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2021 )
  • from C -- TOP 50 REVIEWER : A vivid depiction of a 1960s Harlem man with a foot in two different worlds ( 4.0 out of 5 stars )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Mr. A. Q. Kopp -- Colston Whitehead on Top Form : A wonderfully atmospheric evocation of mid 20th centrury Harlam. Colston Whitehead has created a great set of characters who feel totally authentic. I understand to a native of Harlam and New York that the locations are very accurately described. They include the World Trade Centre being built. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 30, 2021 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Donny Rock -- Meandering story : Harlem in the late 19503 and early 1960s through the eyes of the not-so-honest proprietor of a furniture shop. A convoluted tale, but with a wonderful sense of the place and time of so much tension. the narrative does wander at times, thus making it hard to follow in places. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Mr. Nicholas Blatch -- Wonderful writing. : What a brilliant piece of work, reminds me of the early work of James Elroy be(before he became impenetrable) and Elmore Leonard , superb plotting, characters that jump off the page , often just described in a line or two , street smart dialogue, brings the time and place into focus effortlessly. Can’t recommend it highly enough . ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 14, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from MR J L GEDDES -- Fantastic read : Great author makes magic realism come to life with fully rounded characters living harsh, cruel, desparate situations rising above their dire circumstances. Wonderful, lyrical prose detailing heroic struggle of African slaves to overcome barbaric, brutal, cruel, unchristian "masters" ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 18, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from C A L -- another brilliant read. : Brilliant ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 3, 2021 )
